A proposal should contain:
For Fiction:
- Book’s proposed title and literary genre. Author’s name, address, email address, and phone number(s).
- Overview including advantages of the proposed material, target market, promotion, the number of words, and completion date.
- Synopsis summarizing the concept, content, and appeal. The plot in a single paragraph.
- Author’s profile and academic background. Author’s sales and promotional potential. Information about previous publications (titles, publishers, dates, and sales figures) and publicity information (feature in magazines and newspapers).
- The first 40 – 50 double-spaced pages of the final draft of the manuscript.
For Nonfiction:
- Book’s proposed title and category of writing. Author’s name, address, email address, and phone number(s).
- Overview including target market, promotion, the number of words, and completion date.
- Overview of 4 or 5 competing books. Analyze how your book is different or better.
- Table of contents with chapters summaries.
- Author’s profile and academic background. Author’s sales and promotional potential. Information about previous publications (titles, publishers, dates, and sales figures) and publicity information (feature in magazines and newspapers).
- Three sample chapters. Print double-spaced.
